horney home bases
- Karen Horney’s neoanalytic work (1945), the three home bases, examining our basic neurotic strategies, social relationships and the interpersonal conflict, dominant ways of being:
- Moving Away (detachment, silence), step back more often than lean in whether the situation is casual or conflictual
- Moving Against (challenging, observing), leaning in to challenge and sharing observations even when uninvited or unnecessary and exhibiting a pushing energy in interactions with others
- and Moving Toward (connecting, caring), lean in working to connect through caring about and for others, oftentimes overdoing the caring and veering into the territory of collusion
- each of us has a home base we find most reassuring and comforting, a stance that is thoroughly known to us, it is optimal to have a sense of our familiar old home base and work to build practices that allow us to expand our agility and experience the other home bases
