duotons
— is a series of artworks that summons forth the soulful characters, each one an avatar I must then clothe in words. Most arise spontaneously, abstract and archetypal, process of imagination, while others reflect the clichés of current cultural motifs. I do not choose these beings — they choose me, demanding that I give them voice. I began the Duotons as a means to meditate upon my writing; then, to visually communicate it. Now, the act of drawing has taken precedence. What was meant to illustrate sets the stage for the inquiry as a whole.
Curious fact: The “duoton” palette is stark white, graphite black, cyan blue, and sunglow yellow, inspired by the colors of the Lucian flag, the latter two forming the aforementioned “duo”. No tones or shades, only the clean, decisive strokes that give form to these otherworldly creatures.
